SURVEY RESULTS
I conducted my own survey to find out from a random sample how many people were on the Stem Cell Register, had heard of it and knew what it was. I also asked the participant's age so I could see which age group do not have enough awareness about the Stem Cell Register. Here are my findings.
RESULTS SUMMARY
-
In total, there were 64 respondents.
-
89% of those surveyed aren't on the Stem Cell Register. 49% of these responses are under the age of 25- a scary statistic when younger people are the best chance of being successful donors.
-
34 respondents out of 64 people didn't know what the Stem Cell Register was. 17 of these people are 18-25, a crucial age to join the register.
-
However, 76% of responses said they would be likely to register after finding out that it could potentially save someone's life.
Reasons why some respondents aren't on the register...
"I am not sure what it is or how to be on the register."

"I wasn't too sure how to sign up/ the ins and outs of signing up- I know what it is because of the news etc but I've never seen a sign up info thing or what it entails!"

"I don’t want to have an operation to remove my stem cells"

"I’m scared of the procedure to donate stem cells"

"Don’t know what it would involve to donate if a match were to be found. If I knew this and felt ok about it I would register. People need information to make an informed decision."

These answers are a true reflection of the lack of awareness around this topic. Many of the answers were that they didn't know anything about it so haven't joined. With some saying they were scared to or didn't want an operation- these are examples that there are myths about stem cell donation being extremely painful and requiring an operation when in reality for 90% of cases it isn't. These survey results show that clearly there is not enough awareness around this topic and it has to change.
